Benefits of Implants for Dental Health & Longevity
As a permanent tooth replacement, dental implants offer several benefits to your dental health and your health overall. These benefits include:
Improved Function: Dental implants are designed to function just like a natural tooth, allowing you to speak and eat normally without an awkward adjustment period.
Tooth Alignment Preservation: Implants prevent the neighboring teeth from drifting into an open tooth gap, which can otherwise mess up the alignment of your teeth.
Enhanced Aesthetic: The prosthetic tooth on an implant is designed to match the rest of your teeth, preserving the natural appeal of your smile.
Bone Loss Prevention: Loss of chewing pressure on the jaw bone due to missing tooth roots eventually leads to jaw bone loss, changing the shape of your face. Dental implants bond to the jaw bone and provide the pressure necessary to maintain jaw bone density.
Permanence: Dental implants fuse to the jaw bone, making them a permanent part of your dental structure. Even if the prosthetic tooth is damaged, a new one can easily be attached to the titanium post.
The Dental Implant Process
The implant process begins with a comprehensive exam. Dr. Koo and his staff will take digital x-rays of your teeth and jaw, which they use to determine the right placement for an implant and whether you have enough bone density. If jaw bone density is too low, a bone grafting procedure may be required before an implant can be placed.
Dr. Koo will consult with you to determine your goals and expectations for your smile. Once you have been approved for dental implants, he will work with you to design your implants.
The implant procedure is done in two stages. First, the titanium post is affixed into your jaw bone. The jaw is then left to heal, giving time for the bone to fuse around the implant post and stabilize the implant. After the healing period, Dr. Koo will place the custom prosthetic tooth during a second visit. Your implant is then ready to function as a normal tooth, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile naturally.
